‘FRIENDSHIP AND RELATIONSHIP’
How should relationships be?
Simple, straightforward, with mutual understanding, mutual listening, mutual speaking. The transparency between the two should be pleasing, maturing and enriching to each other.
It is a fact that the bliss that one gets out of a relationship is the best. This is a proven truth now. In other words, if you want to be happy and contented your relationships should be good.
Do we make them easy?
No,
Human relationships are very complex. Suddenly something goes wrong and a relationship that is going on smoothly for years takes a jolt creating a rift between the two persons. Sometimes the relationship is patched up again; sometimes the rift becomes an abyss leading to enmity. Both swear of not even looking at each other. This happens between siblings, between parents and children. Funnily enough there is actually no strong reason for the rift or enmity to exist! Can blood relations be like this? Why does a son who depended totally on his mother, whose mother was his whole world in the childhood finds it difficult to adjust with her as he grows up? Lovers are ready to bring the moon to the earth for the partner before marriage find out that they are not suitable to each other after marriage; why? The relationships of a mother and daughter-in-law and sisters- in-law are almost of enemies; why?
Plenty of examples can be cited of this kind of relationships.
Why is it the case?
The answer is, we really don’t know how to mend it.
Relations should not be clingy or entangled.
They should not be suffocating.
There should be openness where
Everybody can breathe freely according to their own style.
Everybody has his own thoughts and standpoint, perspective of life; he thinks that they are the right ones. So much so that he can’t even accept that others can have different opinions or thoughts. Similarly, relationships are taken for granted and that creates distances.
Misunderstandings, expectations, taking for granted, ‘only I am right’ kind of attitude, undue large ego are some of the causes of distances between relations. Using disrespectful language about others, being unforgiving, deception, betrayal, to malign others, not having control over emotions are some other reasons that cause distancing relations. As a result, you tend to reject the relationship.
But this does not happen in a friendship. Two siblings may not get along with each other but individually they could be the best friends of others. It can happen in a parent-child relation. A son who doesn’t get along with his parents may have very good friendly relation with a senior person in the society.
Then, are we to say that relations are troublesome and friendships are pleasing? We have a saying that once a son fits into your shoes he is like your friend. Why not use the same principle in all relationships?
What is a ‘friendship’? What is its definition?
● Friendship is an emotion/ feeling that can’t really be put into words.
● A complex and beautiful coalition of various emotions is friendship.
● When any two individuals are bonded together with mutual understanding, love and respect it is friendship. Friendship does not depend on one’s age, caste, religion or sex.
● Cicero, a Roman thinker, says, ‘Friendship makes prosperity brighter, while it lightens adversity by sharing its grieves and anxieties.’
● Friendship is the inexpressible comfort of feeling safe with a person, having neither to weigh thoughts nor measure words- this can be a definition of friendship.
● Friendship means… … can’t really tell! When you enter into a friendship you automatically understand its meaning. Friendship can happen in no time but you have to give it some time to stand on the solid foundation of trust. That is a testing period for both the partners.
There are no expectations, and the friend is not taken for granted in a good friendship. This can be applied to relationship in general. All you have to do is to accumulate all the aspects of friendship in a relationship.
Accept, cultivate, and preserve a relation like it is friendship. Husbands and wives can become good friends; their coexistence then becomes melodious.
If the bond between brothers or sisters is strong we easily say, ‘he is my brother but we are thick friends rather than siblings.’
Or we introduce a close friend, ‘he is like my elder brother.’
Similarly we use phrases like ‘he is like my father’ for an elderly advisor. A daughter-in-law may say, ‘my mother-in-law is like my friend.’
‘We sisters-in-laws stay like friends.’
‘My elder brother-in-law is like a brother to me.’
‘My father-in-law understands me like a friend.’
When a friend helps us in difficult situations we say, ‘you supported me like a brother.’
It means that when a friend helps us we assume a relation with him/her and we name a relation as ‘friendship’ that makes us happy.
That is why friendship should not be based on selfishness or motives/ intentions; it should be based on thick relationship; there should be thick friendship in close relationships. Wouldn’t that be wonderful! Then we will not have to look for happiness and satisfaction, it will be there with us.

Relations should not be clingy or entangled.
They should not be suffocating.
There should be openness where everybody
can breathe freely according to their own style.
Friendship makes prosperity brighter, While it lightens adversity by sharing its griefs and anxieties.
Friendship is the inexpressible comfort of feeling safe with a person, having neither to weigh thoughts nor measure words.
